Saint Paul Lemon Law ensures car owners aren’t stuck with vehicles that can’t be properly repaired.
Under Minnesota law, manufacturers must fix, replace, or repurchase defective vehicles — and in many cases, pay additional compensation. Understanding Saint Paul Lemon Law
The Saint Paul Lemon Law was created to protect Minnesota drivers from faulty cars that fail to meet expected standards of quality. If your new or leased vehicle keeps having problems that affect its safety, performance, or value, you may be eligible for:
- A replacement vehicle of equal value
- A full refund including taxes, title, and registration fees
- A cash settlement for diminished vehicle value
- Attorney’s fees covered by the manufacturer if your claim succeeds
You pay nothing upfront — ever.
What Vehicles Are Covered?
Saint Paul Lemon Law applies to:
- New or leased vehicles for personal, household, or family use
- Cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, and motorcycles
- Claims made within 2 years of delivery or during the manufacturer’s warranty period (Minnesota-specific rule)
- Vehicles with the same defect repaired 4 or more times or out of service for 30+ cumulative days
- Some small business vehicles under state weight limits
Not Covered: As-is used vehicles, off-road vehicles, or heavily modified vehicles.

- The issue has been repaired 4 or more times
- The car has been out of service for 30+ cumulative days
