A Nissan CVT is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) built by the supplier Jatco and sold under the Xtronic name. Instead of fixed gears, it uses a steel belt running between two cone-shaped pulleys that change width to create an unlimited range of ratios. It fails when the fluid overheats, thins out, and lets that belt slip.
The failure follows a predictable chain. When the fluid loses viscosity, hydraulic pressure drops, and the belt slips against the pulley faces. That slipping grinds off fine steel particles, sometimes called ferrous fuzz, which clog the valve body and starve the unit of the pressure it needs. Once metal debris is circulating, the damage is usually permanent.
Nissan uses two main units. The smaller CVT7 sits in the Sentra, Versa, and Juke and has a lower torque capacity, which makes it easy to overwhelm in stop-and-go driving. The larger CVT8 sits in the Altima, Rogue, Murano, Maxima, and Pathfinder. Earlier RE0F10A units in 2007 to 2012 models had their own overheating fail-safe problems. Two control parts matter for repairs and warranty coverage, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the Automatic Transmission Control Unit (ATCU).
The most common Nissan CVT symptoms are a shuddering vibration during light acceleration, a rubber-band delay where the engine revs but the car does not speed up, limp mode that caps your speed, whining or humming noise, and sudden loss of power. Most of these appear before 100,000 miles.
The Nissan CVT transmission problem years cluster between 2013 and 2018 across the Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Pathfinder, Murano, and Maxima. The 2013 to 2015 Altima draws more CVT complaints than any other Nissan, and the 2008 to 2016 Rogue is close behind. The table below shows the higher-risk model years for each vehicle.

The worst Nissan CVT years to avoid are 2013 to 2015 for the Altima, 2008 and 2013 to 2016 for the Rogue, and 2013 to 2017 for the Sentra. These carry the highest complaint volumes and the earliest failures, some before 65,000 miles. Models from 2019 onward use revised control logic and cooling, and they fail far less often (CarComplaints, 2026).
Two diagnostic codes define the Nissan CVT judder problem: P17F0 (CVT judder, transmission inspection) and P17F1 (CVT judder, control unit inspection). Nissan addressed them through Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), which are repair instructions to dealers, not a government-ordered recall.
The relevant bulletins include NTB15-014 (Enhanced Diagnostic Logic for CVT Judder), NTB15-084, and NTB17-039, which lay out inspection and repair steps. Related pressure and slip codes such as P0776, P0746, and P1715 often appear alongside them. Nissan’s V6 judder bulletin applies to the 2013 to 2018 Altima, 2013 to 2019 Pathfinder, 2015 to 2019 Murano, 2015 to 2017 Quest, and 2016 to 2019 Maxima (NHTSA TSB records, 2021).
One repair detail matters. Every CVT replacement needs a TCM calibration file written to the car that matches the new valve body. Independent shops sometimes skip this step, and without the correct calibration the replacement unit can fail within miles. No. Nissan has not issued a federal safety recall for the CVT judder defect. It used service bulletins, a few narrow voluntary campaigns, and warranty extensions tied to class action settlements instead. A recall is a government-ordered fix for a safety defect, while a warranty extension is a contractual repair promise with its own limits.
A handful of limited campaigns did exist, such as a torque converter replacement on certain 2015 Rogues, but the broad judder defect never became a recall. In April 2019, Nissan set aside $590.5 million to extend CVT warranties from five years to seven years on roughly 3 million vehicles sold between 2012 and 2017 (Automotive News, 2019). Because none of this is a recall, there is no blanket free-repair mandate. Coverage depends on your exact model, year, and mileage.
Nissan has faced several CVT class action lawsuits, most filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. The settlements extended affected CVT warranties to 84 months or 84,000 miles and offered repair reimbursement, though most of those windows have now closed because the newest covered vehicles are model year 2018.

The Murano and Maxima settlement shows how these terms work in practice. It offered reimbursement up to $5,000 per repair at an independent shop, or the full cost at a Nissan dealer, plus a $1,500 voucher for owners with two or more CVT repairs. The class covers people who bought or leased before April 4, 2025 (settlement administrator, 2025). Since the warranty runs from the original in-service date, the 84-month window has already expired for most of these vehicles.

Missing an opt-out deadline can leave you bound to a settlement that may not fully cover your loss.
Nissan originally marketed its CVT fluid as a lifetime fill, but independent transmission specialists recommend changing the NS-2 or NS-3 fluid every 30,000 miles. Heat-degraded fluid is the single biggest cause of early CVT failure, so this one service does more to protect the transmission than anything else an owner can do.
A drain-and-refill can reduce early-stage shudder, but it will not reverse belt or pulley damage once metal debris is in the system. Avoid a high-pressure flush on a high-mileage unit, which can dislodge debris and make things worse. A fluid and filter service is the cheapest insurance against a four-figure replacement bill (RepairPal, 2026).

Your Nissan may be a lemon if the dealer has made a reasonable number of attempts to fix the same CVT defect and it still is not repaired, or if the vehicle has been out of service for an extended period while under warranty. The exact thresholds vary by state, so the same repair history can qualify in one state and fall short in another.
Most state lemon laws look at repeated repair attempts for the same defect, often three or four, or a cumulative number of days out of service, often around 30, during the warranty period.
